Perak Govt Plans Financial Assistance For University Students Next Year

Posted by pastoday on July 27, 2008

Beginning next year, the Perak Government will introduce a programme to financially assist Perak-born children of low-income families.

Under the programme, children pursuing studies in public universities will each be given RM1,000.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the programme was a continuation from the Perak People’s Scholarship 2008 programme introduced by the Pakatan Rakyat-led government after the March 8 general election.

“The scholarship is a one-off programme but beginning next year, we will plan the new programme with an allocation of RM5 million or RM6 million from the state’s budget,” he told reporters after presenting scholarships to 55 students here Friday.

Mohammad Nizar said the scholarships worth RM1,000 each, was meant to help the students in the registration process at the university.

He said about RM2 million had been set aside by the state government for the programme, through the Perak Foundation.

A student whose family income was below RM1,500 and accepted to pursue a degree at a local university is eligible to apply, said the menteri besar, adding that the state government was willing to consider increasing the financial assistance, from time to time.
